The Alexander
Big plans are in the works at the Historic Brewery Market, a property under Greenwood Lane’s management. Halkirk Properties Limited has an agreement in place with HRM. The $30 million residential, commercial and retail plan for the Brewery District that will invigorate an historic part of Halifax while enhancing the Brewery’s heritage characteristics. The block would consist of four residential developments, including Halkirk and Keith Hall, and the creation of a new 10,000 square foot courtyard and public plaza on Water Street. The Alexander is a 21-storey point residential tower which meets with HRM’s Municipal Planning Strategy and conforms with existing View Plane Legislation. The Brewery development will also double the size of the existing Halifax Farmer’s Market, if the lease is renewed, and add approximately $750,000 of property taxes to HRM’s annual budget, without the need for new expensive infrastructure. Halkirk Properties is seeking approval from Halifax Regional Municipality and wants to begin construction later this year. The intended Brewery Market District development strikes a balance between preserving Halifax’s heritage, and creating a new and exciting piece of architecture that is indicative of the City’s future as one of the great small cities in North America.
